SERGI MATEU (HOMERO)
Sergi Mateu came to La última mirada through a history
of coincidences and, probably, destiny. Just six weeks before beginning to
shoot, we were left without an actor to play Homero. We started to search.
We considered not only Mexico, but Spain and Argentina. Manuel Teil, our Casting
Director, suggested Sergi among a series of other possibilities. He loaned
me a VHS with Sergi's casting for another film. As soon as I saw him, I knew
Sergi was Homero and nobody else. He has a powerful screen presence, a strong
yet also a sweet character; a wonderful gaze and great talent.
Homero was a complex character and Sergi devoted himself fully to him as well
as to the technical difficulties of portraying a man with recently acquired,
progressive blindness. Sergi embraced Homero and gave him everything, moving
the crew to tears on more than one occasion.
Sergi studied modern dance and acting from the ESAD in Barcelona. His theatrical
career includes plays such as El Censor, Els Gangst de la Montanya, La Balada
d'Oscar Wilde, Cartas de Amor, Luna para un Bastardo, El Veri del Teatre y
Caballs de Mar.
He has an extensive filmography. He has been involved in: Le Luce le Tenebre,
Extraños, Resultado final, El Porqué de las Cosas, El hundimiento
del Titanic, Carambolas, El Largo Invierno, La Fiebre de Oro, La Viuda del
Capitán Estrada, La Telaraña, Boom-Boom, Verónica L,.
Una Mujer en mi Jardín, Nunca Estuve en Viena, Estación Central
y Barcelona Connection.
On television he has acted in Face of Terror, Hospital Central, Periodistas,
Have Your Cake and Eat It Too, Miradas Profundas, Strangers on the Plane,
Secretos de Familia y Carmen Brosco.
MARISOL CENTENO (MEI)
Many young actresses auditioned for the role of Mei and some
delivered wonderful performances, but none like Marisol Centeno's. She has
that difficult balance between being both tender and strong and, unlike other
actresses, she understood Mei from the same place I did: Mei was a fighter
without a trace of self-pity.
Marisol devoted herself to the film and fully embraqced her character. With
her enormous talent she gave Mei a sensitive soul and with it, a solid center
on which her character could depend despite whatever the circumstances were.
Marisol studied acting at Casazul Argos and Circus Arts at the École
de Cirque de Verdun in Canada. She began her acting career from a very early
age starring in the children's plays La Bruja de Hansel y Gretel and El niño
de la bola. She has starred in the short films México DF, Cerrando
puertas, La Primavera y La Entrevista. On television she has acted in soap
operas such as Cañaveral de Pasiones, Agujetas de Color de Rosa, El
Vuelo del Águila, Clarisa, Carrusel de las Américas, La Pícara
Soñadora and in the TV series Casos de la Vida Real, Chiquilladas and
Safo.
ARCELIA RAMÍREZ (HERMANA IRMA)
I wrote the part of Sister Irma for Arcelia Ramírez
because I know the quality of her work and her gentle soul. In Arcelia's live,
expressive eyes one can see Irma as a vulnerable character that hides her
doubts and passions behind a nun's habit. Arcelia knew how to take Irma beyond
that habit and to give her a warm personality and the dimension of an intelligent
woman committed to her convictions.
Arcelia studied acting at the Centro Universitario de Teatro (CUT.) Her theatrical
career is extensive and includes plays such as La Pasión de Pentesilea,
La Séptima Morada, La Noche De Hernán Cortés, Las Mujeres
Sabias, Fedra y Otras Griegas, Relaciones Peligrosas among several others.
She has acted in several films, among them El Secreto de Romelia, En un Claroscuro
de la Luna, Zurdo, La Mujer de Benjamín, Cilantro y Perejil, Así
Es La Vida, Perfume de Violetas.
GINA MORETT (MADAME LIN LIN)
What can I say about Gina Morett? A wonderful actress with
whom I worked on the short film La nao de China. I was surprised at the ease
with which she portrayed Madame Lin Lin, quickly locating her gestures, her
gait and the character's mysterious background. I cannot imagine another Madame
Lin Lin except Gina’s.
Gina has a long acting career in theater and in film. She’s acted in
Ángel de Fuego, El Callejón de los Milagros, Sin Remitente,
Por la Libre y Noticias Lejanas as well as a great number of short films and
plays.
